SARU president Mark Alexander believes that privatising South Africa's franchises could help inject money in the teams.

At the moment South African Rugby teams are 49 percent privately owned but Alexander would sell shares to increase private ownership of the franchises to 72-74 per cent.

The motion will be presented at SA Rugby’s next general council meeting in December.

Alexander said they are looking into the matter very seriously.

"The financial sustainability of rugby in the country and our members is of utmost importance. Private and co-ownership is one possibility and we’ve already started looking at the constitution for suggestions. The suggestions will be made to the general council for a decision on co-ownership," Alexander told the Afrikaans weekly.
