Prop Benn Robinson was among 10 players cut from the Wallabies squad for next weekend's Test against New Zealand.
Veteran prop Benn Robinson was among 10 players cut from the Wallabies squad as new coach Ewen McKenzie narrowed his selection pool for the Bledisloe Cup Test against New Zealand.
McKenzie, who replaced Robbie Deans as head coach after Australia's 2-1 series defeat to the British and Irish Lions last month, included eight uncapped players in the 30-man squad announced Friday. He still needs to trim that down to 22 for the August 17 Test in Sydney.
Robinson, who started against the Lions, wasn't among the four props retained in the squad preparing to take on the All Blacks.
His exclusion from the squad is a major shock as it comes just over a month after he re-signed with Australian rugby for another three years.
McKenzie said Robinson was disappointed when he informed him of his omission on Friday.
“I was actually pleased he was disappointed,” the Wallabies boss said.
“If he wasn't disappointed I would be disappointed.
“I want people to be emotionally connected to the Wallabies and I want it to matter whether they're in or out.
“Obviously for a player of his experience it's a bit of a blow but everyone needs to understand you've got to be delivering and it's a week by week contract.
“He knows exactly what he needs to do and I know he's quite capable of giving us what we need.”
Reds playmaker Quade Cooper was retained, as expected, along with uncapped fly-halves Matt Toomua and Bernard Foley. Waratahs-bound scrum-half Nick Phipps and the Sydney-based franchise's captain Dave Dennis were the other notable omissions.
Brumbies number nine Nic White was preferred to Phipps as back-up for Will Genia while Dennis lost out to Brumbies skipper Ben Mowen, who was one of the Wallabies' best players against the Lions.
Prop Paddy Ryan, Rebels lock Hugh Pyle, Reds backs Mike Harris, Chris Feauai-Sautia and Anthony Fainga'a, and Waratahs wing Peter Betham were the other players cut form the extended 40-man squad named last month.
Wallabies 30-man squad: James Horwill (c), Albert Anae, Ben Alexander, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Quade Cooper, Nick Cummins, Kane Douglas, Saia Faingaa, Scott Fardy, Israel Folau, Bernard Foley, Will Genia, Liam Gill, Michael Hooper, Sekope Kepu, Tevita Kuridrani, Christian Lealiifano, Ben McCalman, Hugh McMeniman, Jesse Mogg, Stephen Moore, Ben Mowen, James O'Connor, Jake Schatz, Rob Simmons, Scott Sio, James Slipper, Joe Tomane, Matt Toomua, Nic White.
