Injured Rebels skipper Nic Stirzaker's return is still in doubt as they prepare to host the Reds at AAMI Park on Saturday.
Scrum-half Stirzaker was initially expected to return from a shoulder injury that he sustained last year and wear the captaincy armband to lead his side into the 2016 season, but the Melbourne franchise admits that his return date remains a mystery.
Rebels head coach Tony McGahan said that the 25-year-old might still be unavailable when they travel to Tokyo to face the Sunwolves for round four next week.
'We are still a little unclear on his return unfortunately,' McGahan told AAP.
'We were originally hoping he would be back for the Samoa game (the Rebels' last pre-season trial) but here we are four weeks later with no clarity.
'We go away early next week…it's a long season and we have to make sure we make the right decision.'
