The Pumas bagged their second win of the Currie Cup season on Friday thanks to a 15-13 victory over the Eastern Province Kings in Port Elizabeth.
In a dour affair that saw endless reset scrums, handling errors and penalties, the Kings scored the only try of the game early in the second half via replacement prop Lizo Gqoboka.
But five penalties from the boot of Pumas fly-half JC Roos proved enough for the visitors to claim their second win from three games, having upset the Sharks on the opening weekend.
There was late drama as the Kings desperately tried to snatch victory but fly-half Karlo Aspeling missed what would have been the winning drop goal in the last minute from right in front.
The result means the Kings are still winless in the Currie Cup this year.
The Pumas led 6-3 at the interval thanks to two penalties from Roos to one from Kings full-back Scott van Breda.
The Kings dominated both possession and territory in the opening half and came closest to scoring via scrum-half Enrico Acker, only for the TMO to disallow the score.
The hosts also had the upper hand at scrum time, but failed to turn their domination into points due to series of unforced errors.
The second half followed a similar pattern but the hosts were able to take the lead for the first time around the hour mark when Gqoboka rumbled over from short range after a period of sustained pressure.
Van Breda added the conversion to put his side 13-9 up.
But the Pumas scrum made a comeback and Roos could add two more penalties to put the Pumas back in front in the 74th minute.
A nail-biting finish saw the Kings throw the kitchen sink at the Pumas' defence but Aspeling's late drop sailed well wide, meaning the hosts had to settle for a losing bonus point.
