South Africa scrum-half Ruan Pienaar has been ruled out for six to eight weeks with a medial knee ligament injury.

Pienaar was injured in a collision with team-mate Duane Vermeulen in the Springboks' 14-10 loss to New Zealand in Wellington.

The accident caused Pienaar obvious discomfort, with the Ulster scrum-half carried from the field.

According to reports he will now play no further part in the tournament, opening the door for Francois Hougaard and possibly Cobus Reinach.

South Africa are already without number one scrum-half Fourie du Preez, who was injured in the win over Scotland back in June.

The Springboks will face Australia in Cape Town before taking on the All Blacks at Ellis Park.

Francois Louw is another concern for Heyneke Meyer and his coaching staff, with the flanker to have scans and visit a consultant in Cape Town on Tuesday regarding a nerve down his arm.
