Louis Picamoles could be out of action until January after picking up a lung infection over the off-season which has kept him sidelined.

The France and Toulouse number eight has yet to feature this season and was initially ruled out for a month with the club very vague over the reason for his absence.

But the Midi Olympique revealed today that he is struggling with a serious lung infection and is not expected to be fit again until the new year, meaning that he will miss France's November Tests.

Picamoles explained that he tried to train with Toulouse at the start of the season but was struggling to cope with the exertions and after some tests, he found out what the problem was.

“I picked up a virus and a bacteria has found its way into my lungs,” he told L'Equipe.

“It's a sort of pneumopathy which has given me breathing problems during this period and was the reason why I could train properly.

“When training started up again in July, I could feel that something wasn't right. It was difficult whenever I put in effort. I did some tests and was well-looked after.

“I've got a treatment to fight against the virus and the bacteria. It's effective.”

With Picamoles missing, Damien Chouly and Antonie Claassen will likely battle it out for France's number eight shirt in November, although Philippe Saint-André will be able to call up someone from outside his elite squad for an upcoming training camp.

It remains to be seen whether Toulouse will look to bring in a medical joker. They are well-stocked at number eight with Gillian Galan and Imanol Harinordoquy, although both players picked up knocks at the weekend.
