Blues captain James Parsons expressed his delight after his side secured a 24-16 victory over the Jaguares in Albany on Saturday.

The result was a momentous one for the Blues as it was their first victory since they beat the Highlanders in their season opener in Auckland last month.

Although the Blues battled early on, and played with 14 men for 10 minutes during the first half after Tevita Li was yellow carded, they soaked up the pressure before taking control and Parsons praised his side's fightback.

"It wasn't pretty," he said, admitting his side were under pressure during the game's early stages.

"We reacted well to it, stayed positive then when we got a chance to keep it down here we did."

Scrum-half Bryn Hall said the result was important as it improves the men from Auckland's position on the New Zealand Conference table.

“It was a win we needed to stay in touch with the other New Zealand teams,” he explained.

“The game got scrappy at times but our defence was excellent, the scrum was outstanding and I thought our backs took a big step forward.”

Although the Jaguares suffered their fourth successive loss, scrum-half and stand-in captain Martin Landajo said they relished the experience gained from the match.

"This is new for us, first tournament here," he explained.

We are enjoying it, we are learning every match. We enjoy playing with the best teams in the world so we are having fun."
