Owens confirmed for Champions Cup final

Nigel Owens of Wales has been appointed to referee the Champions Cup final between Racing 92 and Saracens at the Grand Stade de Lyon on Saturday, May 14.

Ireland's John Lacey will take charge of the Challenge Cup final between Harlequins and Montpellier at the same venue on Friday, May 13.

The appointments were announced today (Friday, April 29) by EPCR's selection committee which is chaired by the tournament organiser's Head of Match Officials, Donal Courtney.

Having previously refereed European club rugby's showpiece match in 2008, 2009, 2012 and last season, Owens will be in charge for a record fifth time in Lyon. The Welshman is currently the most experienced official in the northern hemisphere and has been in the middle for 103 European club games to date.

His assistant referees will be Ireland's George Clancy and Leighton Hodges of Wales.

Lacey will be refereeing his 50th European club match when he takes charge of the Challenge Cup final and his assistant referees will be Marius Mitrea of Italy and Ireland's Peter Fitzgibbon.

The Champions Cup final is on course for a 59,000-sell out attendance while tickets for the Challenge Cup decider.
