New Zealand centre Ma'a Nonu suffered a shoulder injury in his side's Rugby Championship victory over South Africa in Johannesburg.

Nonu left the field after 46 minutes and was replaced by Malakai Fekitoa, with head coach Steve Hansen playing a waiting game on the former's fitness.

"He's got a sore shoulder, that is all I can tell you," Hansen said after the win.

"It is something to do with his rotator cuff, they don't think it is too bad. But with most injuries, in the heat of the moment, it is not until the next day [that more is known]. So we will probably get him scanned when we get home and we will have a better idea then."

Meanwhile, lock Brodie Retallick will also be monitored after he suffered an ankle injury during the team's warm-up but battled through it in the game.
