Dan Carter’s long-awaited return from injury will not happen in Brisbane against the Wallabies, according to Steve Hansen.

Carter fractured his fibula in the Super Rugby Final loss to the Waratahs back at the beginning of August and has managed only 40 minutes of rugby since in the ITM Cup for Canterbury.

The leading Test points scorer of all time was ruled out of Canterbury’s game this weekend, with Hansen adding that it would be better not to risk him against the Wallabies.

Hansen added that Carter was likely to start the match against the USA in Chicago next month.

”We won’t take him to Brisbane, and DC believes this as well, that we are better to get him going and confident and happy in himself in his game,” Hansen told Radio Sport.

”If all goes well, then we will take him on the end of year tour and he is likely to start against USA.

”He is one of the great players of all time and if he is fit and free of injury, then he is still a great player.”

Hansen also confirmed that Ben Smith would be rested next weekend, having “lost 6kg in that last week” and after “showing signs of wear and tear.”
