Newcastle relish start to 2016

Newcastle Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards was delighted to see his side start the year with a first Premiership win.

Saturday's victory over an out-of-sorts Bath moved Newcastle off the bottom of the table following London Irish's defeat away to Gloucester.

The bottom two sides will meet next week at the Madejski Stadium in what already feels like a must-win contest for the two clubs to avoid relegation.

Richards and his squad though will savour securing that first win after six losses and a draw beforehand.

"It's a great start to the year. I thought we deserved the win," Richards said.

"Okay, we missed a few points, but we came up with the goods and deserved it. The boys stuck to their guns and it's probably the first time this season we've done that.

"Now we need to take that into the game at London Irish and build on it."
