Mnisi to lead Lions against Kings

Date published: September 3 2015

Inside centre Howard Mnisi will captain the Golden Lions in Saturday's game against the Eastern Province Kings in Johannesburg.

Regular captain Warren Whiteley was set to lead the team but is a late withdrawal from the matchday squad after he sustained a calf injury at training on Thursday.

As a result, Fabian Booysen – who was set to play on the flank – will now start at number eight and Kwagga Smith comes into the starting team on the side of the scrum. Jano Venter will provide back-row cover on the bench.

Meanwhile, Lions head coach Johan Ackermann has followed through with his rotation policy, making wholesale changes to the side which downed the Pumas in Nelspruit last weekend.

In the forwards, Malcolm Marx (hoker) and Julian Redelinghuys (tighthead prop) will start in the front-row. MB Lusaseni is included at lock.

Additionally, there have been five changes to the backline. Lohan Jacobs will start at scrum-half, while Jaco van der Walt has been given an opportunity to start at fly-half.

Anthony Volmink comes in on the left wing, while Ruan Combrinck shifts to right wing to make space for Andries Coetzee who returns from injury this week at full-back. Additionally, Stokkies Hanekom will start at outside centre.

Golden Lions: 15 Andries Coetzee, 14 Ruan Combrinck, 13 Stokkies Hanekom, 12 Howard Mnisi (c), 11 Anthony Volmink, 10 Jaco van der Walt, 9 Lohan Jacobs, 8 Fabian Booysen, 7 Kwagga Smith, 6 Stephan de Wit, 5 Martin Muller, 4 MB Lusaseni, 3 Julian Redelinghuys, 2 Malcolm Marx, 1 Jacques van Rooyen.
