Free State Cheetahs have announced that MJ Smith, brother of Franco, will be their head coach for the first part of the 2016 Currie Cup.
The 40-year-old will then hand back the reins to Franco for the second segment of the competition, once the Super Rugby season has ended.
2016's campaign will see the Currie Cup and Super Rugby overlap, with Free State director of rugby Rory Duncan telling Netwerk24 their plan.
"As it stands, MJ will coach the first round and Franco will take over later. At the moment our philosophy is to implement and use the same coaching structures across the board," he said as the team looks to improve on 2015's fourth-place finish.
