The 32-year-old Australian announced on his Twitter page that the operation will put him out of action for at least three months.

Mitchell, who has been capped 70 times by the Wallabies, hasn't played for the Top 14 side since April 3 when the three-time European champions lost to Clermont.

Head coach Bernard Laporte has, however, received good news in that Wales full-back Leigh Halfpenny is set to be declared fit for the Top 14 play-off matches.

The former Cardiff Blues utility back picked up a knee injuy in a World Cup warm-up match against Azzuri and has not been out of action for Toulon all season.
