Former Golden Lions and New Zealand coach John Mitchell has emerged as the bookmakers’ early favourite to take over from Jake White at the Sharks.

Mitchell, who is rugby coach of the University of Kwazulu-Natal in Durban, is ahead of former Italy boss Nick Mallett in the opinion of Sportingbet.

The 50-year-old spent two years in charge of the All Blacks – from 2001 to 2003 – and has remained in South Africa since he split with the Lions, with others linked to the Sharks role being Brendan Venter and Gary Gold while Dick Muir is an outside option, according to the bookmaker.

Mitchell also spent a brief stage working as a consultant at Premiership side Sale Sharks.
