Loose forward Lachlan McCaffrey will re-join the Brumbies for the 2018 Super Rugby season after signing a deal with the Canberra-based team.

McCaffrey was originally with the Brumbies for the 2014 Super Rugby season, making his debut for the club against the Reds and becoming Brumby #161. He had previously made his Super Rugby debut in 2010 for the Waratahs against the Cheetahs in Sydney.

After making just that one appearance as a replacement for the New South Wales team, McCaffrey shifted West to join up with the Western Force, going onto make seven appearances for the club before signing for the Brumbies.

The 27-year-old Australian made the move to Europe and joined Leicester Tigers from London Welsh in May 2015 making 47 appearances for the Premiership club, scoring five tries.

“I am very much looking forward to returning to Canberra and to playing for the Brumbies in the 2018 Super Rugby season,” McCaffrey said of his move back to the Australian Capital Territory.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time playing overseas and had some wonderful experiences playing for both London Welsh and the Leicester Tigers. I felt, however, that I needed a new challenge and explored the opportunity of returning home.

“The Brumbies have given me a chance to play Super Rugby once more and I am aiming to repay their confidence in my abilities by helping the team towards another Super Rugby title.

“I understand how the Brumbies tick having been there before and I loved the culture and the family feel of the team and the community. The Brumbies are a much-respected team and I am looking forward to playing in the colours once more.”

Brumbies Head Coach Dan McKellar was delighted that the club had managed to sign McCaffrey for the 2018 campaign.

“Lachlan is a very good player who brings experience of playing abroad into the environment,” Thomson said. “He is a very skilful player and a naturally gifted footballer with an excellent offload.

“Having been a part of the Brumbies in 2014 he understands the ethos of the club. He will bring a wealth of knowledge to the club and, having played for ourselves the Force and the Waratahs, he is no stranger to the Super Rugby competition.

“We are looking forward to welcoming him back to our Brumbies family and to seeing him in our colours once more.”
