Interim Wales head coach Robin McBryde credited his youthful side's determination as they laboured to a 22-18 win over Japan.

Seven new caps appeared for the first time as a try from Harry Robinson and 14 points from the boot of Dan Biggar confirmed the victory in Osaka.

With 15 players away on tour with the British and Irish Lions, the young Welsh side struggled against a spirited Japanese outfit – leaving McBryde very pleased with his side's resilience.

“I was hugely proud. I was a bit disappointed that we put ourselves in that position to start off with, but once we were in that position, the boys really dug deep,” said McBryde.

“I can't fault them. They really got together and showed character and true grit to come through that second half.

“We had seven new caps today against an experienced Japan team that had obviously targeted this game.

“We were in a tough place at half-time, so the fact we have come out with a win is hugely encouraging.”
