The Stormers may make a surprise call when it comes to their captain for the 2016 Super Rugby season.

South Africa prop Frans Malherbe is being considered for the role according to Netwerk24 – one of a few names in the running along with Juan de Jongh and Schalk Burger.

Malherbe, 24, has 12 Test caps for the Springboks since his debut in 2013.

De Jongh is currently involved with the South Africa Sevens set-up, while Burger has finished up his club commitments in Japan ahead of a final Super Rugby season before joining Premiership champions Saracens.

Meanwhile, Fleck named a 30-man squad on Thursday for the Stormers' upcoming pre-season friendly against the SWD Eagles.

"We are really looking forward to the game, there was a huge crowd there last year and the people were fantastic. We have always enjoyed playing in George, especially as there are a lot of Stormers fans there," Fleck told the Stormers' website.

"Going on last year, the Eagles were great opponents, and it was a game that was played at a high tempo, which is exactly what we are looking for."
