The Tasman Makos were able to pip Waikato 24-19 in a hotly contested game in Blenheim on Sunday.

The two teams were neck and neck throughout the game with the score sitting at 16-16 all at 65 minutes, and was seemingly going to end up as a draw. But in the last 10 minutes Tasman upped the tempo and displayed too much intensity for Waikato to stay in the game.

James Lowe was able to break the line and give it off to Andrew Makalio, who went down just before the line and eventually allowed Alex Ainley to charge over for his side.

Damian McKenzie made a big statement for All Black inclusion in the game, as he played superbly despite his team's loss. He slotted five kicks from  five.

The Makos played a clever game of rugby, as they kicked with intelligence, keeping Waikato constantly on the back foot. Their kicking game eventually meant they dominated the territory stats with 61 per cent to Waikato's 39 per cent.
