Racing 92 scrum-half Maxime Machenaud hopes that Saturday's Top 14 opener against Toulon will show how far the team has come.
The France international admits that part of Racing's pre-season has been about putting last season's disappointments behind them.
Racing were knocked out of the Champions Cup in the quarter-finals by Saracens and fell at the same stage to eventual champions Stade Français in the Top 14, after finishing the year in fifth place.
Starting away to Toulon is an unforgiving first game for Machenaud and his side but he knows the club will also get a chance to measure their progress straight away.
"When we started this pre-season we got into our head that he had to move on," Machenaud told Rugbyrama.
"Anyway, we will soon get into the thick of things with this trip to Toulon.
"That's good, it sets the tone for the season, and we get to see directly where we currently are as a side up against one of the best teams in this championship.
"We'll see if we can compete. Afterwards, it won't give a lot of information because it's only the first game. There will still be 25 to go, but this can be the start of a great season."
