Wales flanker Dan Lydiate is expected to start against Italy after his wife gave birth to a daughter in Paris.

Lydiate rushed back to the French capital on Tuesday after his partner Nia went into labour, where the Lions flanker is based with Racing Métro.

Lydiate will now return to Cardiff on Wednesday evening in preparation for Saturday's match.

“We arranged some flights from Cardiff to Paris on Tuesday morning,” said Gatland before the birth to WalesOnline.

“He could be back on Thursday or Friday. But I have said to him if you need some time with your family and miss the weekend, we are more than happy to accommodate this.

“Dan is desperate to be back for Saturday but we will play that by ear and support him as much as we can.

“One of the things we emphasise as a squad is that it's family first.

“We are lucky to be involved in professional sport but it's about making sure things are right at home and families are happy.

“You don't want to miss the birth of your first child which is very important.

“We will do everything we can to accommodate Dan.

“If he's there on Saturday then great but if he's not, we will make other arrangements.”
