Wellington got their ITM Cup season off to the perfect start with a solid 55-16 victory over Counties Manukau at ECOLight Stadium on Thursday.

Last year's winners of the Championship could not live with the prowess of their visitors as the likes of Shaun Treeby and Dane Coles shone.

The Lions' tries were scored by Sinoti Sinoti, Jeffery Toomaga-Allen, Coles, Matt Proctor, Treeby, Tim Bateman and Taniela Koroi.

The Steelers' only response came from Maama Vaipulu, with a 29-9 half-time scoreline seeing the game put to bed with plenty of time remaining.

Wellington fly-half Lima Sopoaga kicked thirteen points for his side, who will travel to Taranaki in Round Two. Counties go to North Harbour.
