Brian Lima has resigned from his role as coach of the Samoan national side after being charged with domestic violence.

Lima's ex-wife, Lemalu Sina Retzlaff, published an image of her bruised and cut face after the alleged assault by Lima last month.

Lima has now sent a letter to the chairman of the Samoa Rugby Union and to Samoa Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa'ilele confirming his resignation from “all active roles”, according to The Samoa Observer.

The former Samoa centre is due in court next week to face allegations of causing actual bodily harm and being armed with a dangerous weapon.

Lima played in five Rugby World Cups and won 64 caps for Samoa between 1990-2007. He was induceted into the IRB's Hall of Fame in 2011.
