Montpellier have suffered a setback after flanker Wiaan Liebenberg was ruled out for up to four months, the Top 14 club confirmed on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old South African back-row, who joined the French side from the Bulls in 2005, has a sprained wrist that requires an operation.

Liebenberg is expected to miss between three to four months of rugby, joining Benoît Paillaugue, Bismarck du Plessis, Jacques du Plessis, Robins Tchalé-Watchou, Vincent Martin, Benjamin Fall, Nicolaas Van Rensburg and Marvin O’Connor on the injury list at the Altrad Stadium.

Montpellier currently sit in second position in the Top 14 standings and travel to take on Pau at Stade du Hameau on Saturday, December 31.
