Liebenberg, who represented South Africa in five Tests in 2012, has been plagued by back injuries in recent seasons and could only watch from the sidelines as WP beat the Golden Lions in Saturday’s Currie Cup Final at Newlands in Cape Town.

“It is wonderful for my friends in the team, but I am really disappointed that I could not be involved,” he told Die Burger’s website.

“In 2012 I was also involved in the successful Currie Cup competition, but again it was undone by injury.”

The 32-year-old, who hails from Bloemfontein, played his first match for WP in 2006 but will return to the city of his birth enriched by his rugby experiences.
