Leicester director of rugby Richard Cockerill has revealed the club will not be signing South Africa captain Jean de Villiers.
The Leicester Mercury reports that talks between the two parties have ended.
De Villiers is out of contract following the Rugby World Cup and recently made a remarkable recovery from a serious leg injury in order to be fit for the tournament.
The 34-year-old has played overseas before with Munster but spent the majority of his career in Super Rugby with the Stormers.
"We have had discussions with Jean de Villiers and we thought that we might have had a deal there but he has decided to stay in SA at this point – so we move on," Cockerill said.
Leicester have said for some months that they are in the market for a marquee signing ahead of the new season.
