Gloucester have confirmed that England international openside flanker Matt Kvesic has signed a contract extension with the club.

The 22-year-old is the first member of the current squad to agree a new contract, and his commitment is a powerful statement of the club’s intention to continue building a squad capable of competing at the very highest level.

The former Worcester player moved down the M5 to join Gloucester in 2013 and went on to make 29 appearances in his first season with the club.

2014-15, his second campaign with the club, has seen him start the season in impressive style, catching the eye with a number of all action performances.

Director of Rugby David Humphreys told the club website that, following the club’s encouraging start to the season, Kvesic’s signing is an important next step in Gloucester’s ongoing evolution.

“I’m very pleased that Matt has committed his future to the club. His desire to remain with Gloucester and be part of what we are building here speaks volumes about where we are headed.

“Matt’s a quality player, a young talented individual who will be a very important part of our squad going forward. He’s the first to put pen to paper, but I’m confident that he won’t be the last in the next few weeks.”

Kvesic himself confirmed that he had no hesitation in agreeing to extend his Kingsholm stay.

“I’m really happy to have things sorted out, and to have got it out of the way so early. I’m enjoying my rugby massively at the moment, and I think everyone can see the progress that we’re making as a team.

“It’s a great club, on and off the field. We play at a great stadium in front of fantastic fans. Agreeing to stay was a very easy decision.

“The last few months have seen the club starting to put everything in place for Gloucester to be successful going forward. It’s all starting to come together, and I’m really looking forward to playing my part.”
