Auckland lock Jack Whetton has signed for Leicester Tigers until the end of the current season, with an option to extend the deal.

Whetton has Super Rugby experience with the Brumbies and the 22-year-old has been training with Leicester over the last few days.

With rugby success strong in his family – Whetton’s father Gary captained the All Blacks and played 58 Tests, with his uncle Alan playing 65 – Leicester hope that the young prospect will be a hit.

Club captain Ed Slater is out for the season while Geoff Parling is working his way back from injury.

“We are a little bit short of lock cover,” Cockerill told the BBC.

“He has signed until the end of the season. We have an option for longer and we’ll see how he gets on.”
