Wales and Cardiff Blues prop Gethin Jenkins will miss the start of the season with a calf injury.

The 33-year-old has suffered a grade one tear of his calf, although it remains to be seen how long he will be out for.

It's not the first time Jenkins has struggled with a calf problem, having been forced home from the Lions tour of Australia last year.

He also struggled during the 2013 Six Nations with the same problem, and has already been ruled out of the Blues' opening Pro12 fixture against Zebre.

Coach Mark Hammett admitted that he didn't yet know when Jenkins would be fit, but he wasn't going to take any chances.

“Gethin Jenkins won't be available,” he told Wales Online.

“He's had a slight calf injury, I think it's a grade one, so we'll just look after him and make sure he's OK.”
