Germany triumphed in their first ever match against Uruguay, while Spain were defeated at home by Tonga.

Germany 24-21 Uruguay

Christopher Hilsenbeck was Germany’s hero at the Frankfurter Volksbank Stadion in Frankfurt last Saturday after his late penalty clinched a dramatic win over Uruguay.

Uruguay surged into an early lead, scoring a try after just 90 seconds and went 15-3 ahead.

But the hosts produced a powerful second-half performance to tie the scores at 21-21 before Hilsenbeck kicked the winning penalty just before the final whistle.

Spain 13-28 Tonga

Tonga never looked losing against Spain at the Ciudad Universitaria in Madrid, despite going behind to an early Brad Linklater penalty. Tries from Daniel Faleafa and Fetu’u Vainikolo handed the visitors a 14-3 half-time.

Tonga did lose Faleafa to a yellow card before the break and Spain promptly hit back, scoring a try through David Barrera.

Linklater responded to Sonatane Takulua’s try to give Spain hope at 21-13, before Kali Hala’s try in the 79th minute put the seal on the win.
