Hurricanes head coach Chris Boyd admitted it was a bittersweet victory for his team over the Sharks after Dane Coles suffered a rib injury.
All Blacks hooker Coles left the action early in the second-half of their 41-0 Super Rugby quarter-final win clutching the side of his chest.
That puts the captain's participation in next week's semi-final in serious doubt and Boyd was clearly upset about the injury he sustained.
"I'm distraught for Dane Coles, that's put a damper on things for us," he told Sky Sports following his team's six-try triumph in Wellington.
"He's done something to a rib or a cartilage so he's off to hospital."
On his side's impressive showing, Boyd did look at the positives and was particularly impressed by TJ Perenara and Beauden Barrett.
"We're obviously pleased with the victory," he said.
"It was very tough for the Sharks to come over here, they didn't get here until Wednesday. Our guys are used to playing in these (wet weather) conditions so I think we were able to adapt probably better than they were."
He added: "I thought TJ was particularly good tonight and Beauden's kicking game was a master-class. It was TJ's best game this year.
"Beauden is now consistently delivering high class performances and long may it continue."
