Scarlets head coach Simon Easterby was “delighted for the players” after his side shocked Racing Métro 19-13 at Stade Yves-du-Manoir on Friday.

Taking on a star-studded side that included Lions duo Mike Phillips and Jonathan Sexton, the Welsh region won to move up to third spot in the Pool.

And that left coach Easterby full of pride ahead of next week's home fixture against Harlequins that will bring an end to their European campaign.

“I'm just delighted for the players; after all the hard work that we've put in over the last few weeks it has paid off,” he told the region's website.

“Tonight wasn't a perfect performance by any means but I think we delivered the type of performance needed to grind out a victory and withstood a bit of pressure early on that kept us in the game.

“We took our chances on the whole and I'm delighted that the hard work has been rewarded with a result. It wasn't a pretty performance tonight but winning in France rarely is. The important thing is that we closed out the game and that's exactly what we did this evening.”

Easterby also paid tribute to the travelling fans, thanking them for making the trip.

“The supporters were outstanding this evening and from minute one they were heard above the noise of the Racing supporters,” he continued.

“They gave the players a big lift I'm sure on the pitch. I've got a lot of time for them putting in a lot of effort to be here this evening and we've rewarded them as well.”
