New Bath head coach Tabai Matson has revealed that the Premiership side were not the only club interested in acquiring his services.

The former Crusaders assistant coach, who has taken over the reins at Bath with the club's new director of rugby Todd Blackadder, said Toulon and Leinster were also keen to recruit him.

Matson admitted that he was hoping to succeed Blackadder as the Crusaders' head coach but when Scott Robertson was given that job his focus turned elsewhere.

"I was pretty heartbroken when I didn't get the head coaching nod," he told Radio Live in New Zealand.

"But as one door shuts another one opens. A few people started calling and I had a couple of options in Europe."

Matson admitted that the prospect of coaching at Irish province Leinster excited him and that he also held talks with heavyweights Toulon.

But the chance to coach with Blackadder again, at a club like Bath, proved difficult to resist.

"This one (opportunity) with Bath is unique, with Toddy there," he added.

"Very rarely do you get to go to another environment with someone you trust and respect so much. It's exciting times."
