Harris eyeing Rebels full-back role

New Melbourne Rebels recruit Mike Harris is set to start his spell at his new side as their first-choice full-back.

Jason Woodward – who wore the Rebels’ number 15 jersey in most of their matches during 2014 – moved to the Hurricanes during the off-season and Harris is seen as his perfect replacement.

Harris can also play at fly-half or inside centre but will get a chance to impress at full-back when the Rebels face his former side, the Reds, in a pre-season match in Cairns on Saturday.

The Wallaby said he was relishing the prospect of playing at full-back even though he is prepared to play any position for his new franchise.

“I will play wherever’s best for the team and I’d like to keep all three strings to my bow,” Harris told AAP.

“But I’ve had a lot of training time at the back and it’s something that I’m quite enjoying.”

In 2015, the Rebels impressed during their pre-season matches, winning both matches – including a win over eventual tournament winners the Waratahs – and the 25-year-old said they want to repeat that feat this year.

“With only two trials there’s not that time to ease in,” added Harris.

“Everyone’s going to be fired up ready to go and the lungs are going to be tested.”

Harris is excited to face his former team-mates in his first match for his new side and hopes his inside knowledge of their opponents will help the Rebels to secure victory.

“I’m looking forward to playing against them,” he said.

“I know them quite well so hopefully I can use that as an advantage.”
