Grenoble coach Fabrice Landreau has described new second row signing Paul Willemse as a ‘beautiful 21-year-old baby’.

The youthful Blue Bulls lock has made the move to the Top 14 following the conclusion of his side’s participation in the Currie Cup.

“He’s a beautiful 21-year-old baby (2.01m and 127kg),” Landreau told Rugbyrama.

“He’s a young player, and I hope that he will grow with us.”

Willemse featured regularly in the Currie Cup and caught the eye in Super Rugby this year alongside Victor Matfield, with the Bulls being extremely disappointed to see him leave but unable to match ‘a massive offer’ from the French club.

Willemse plans to return to South Africa in two years’ time to make a bid for the Springboks jersey and could well be back in Bulls colours too.

The South African is in good company at Grenoble, with Hendrik Roodt being a key member of the forwards while Charl McLeod and Gio Aplon are present in the backs.

“It was fast but I was prepared to come here at the end of the Currie Cup,” said Willemse.

“I’m very happy to be here at Grenoble and excited for the season ahead with the club.”
