Scotland booked their place in the Cup quarter finals after an enthralling opening day of action.

The hosts beat Australia 19-7, USA 26-0 and Spain 33-12 thanks to two James Eddie tries to reach a first Cup quarter final since round two of the Sevens World Series in Dubai, and top a pool for the first time since the 2013 Tokyo Sevens.

They will face defending champions South Africa in the quarter finals after the Blitzbokke suffered a 19-5 defeat to New Zealand to finish runners-up in Pool A, despite Justin Geduld crossing for his fourth try of the day.

The All Blacks Sevens took a step closer to a 12th World Series title with their progression to the Cup quarter finals having earlier beaten Samoa 26-7 and Portugal 38-0. The reigning Series champions will now face their trans-Tasman rivals Australia in the quarter finals.

Despite losing their opening match to the hosts, Australia came back strongly to beat Spain 36-7 and USA 34-14 thanks to two tries from Jesse Parahi.

Canada topped their pool after a 7-7 draw with England in their pool decider and booked their place in the Cup quarter finals having earlier beaten Japan thanks to a Mike Scholz hat-trick and France with Connor Trainor scoring one of the tries of the day.

Geraint John's side will face Kenya in the quarter finals after Paul Treu's side progressed thanks to a superior points difference over Wales and Argentina with all three sides winning just one match on day one.

England will play Fiji after Samisoni Viriviri took his season try tally to 45 with five at Scotstoun Stadium in their 26-7, 24-17 and 45-0 wins over Argentina, Kenya and Wales.
