Barbarians head coach John Kirwan has backed Nick Cummins for an Australian recall ahead of the Rugby World Cup.

Cummins dotted down in Saturday’s hugely entertaining clash at Twickenham, as the Wallabies finished on top 40-36.

Highlighting Cummins’ defensive work as well as his poaching abilities in attack, Kirwan was full of praise for the Coca Cola West Red Sparks winger.

“I think he’s a very special character in our game,” said Kirwan.

“If I was Michael Cheika I’d be trying to get him home as quick as I could.

“He just knows how to sniff out a try and I thought what he did defensively today was incredible.

“He was cutting off their wide ball at times, just through reading it properly. He’s a special athlete.”

Cummins admitted that while he wouldn’t be looking for a way out of his contract in Japan, he would cherish playing for his country again.

“That sort of feeling holds pretty deep in you and I would love to be back in the mix,” added Cummins.

“I have signed for two years and I’m a man of my word and will go through with that, but if something can be worked out, I’ll be stoked.”
