Wallabies full-back Israel Folau has caused controversy after he voiced his opposition to same-sex marriage via social media.
Folau, who is a devout Christian, sparked a backlash on Twitter on Wednesday when he tweeted: “I love and respect all people for who they are and their opinions. but personally, I will not support gay marriage.”
The Australian Rugby Union, along with the NRL and Cricket Australia, are supporting the ‘yes’ campaign, so much so that they changed their social media logo to a rainbow Wallaby.
Folau’s beliefs are clearly in direct contrast to comments made by Wallabies skipper Michael Hooper.
“For a lot of guys, they’re about footy and our job is rugby, but the sport has the ability to cross boundaries,” Hooper told The Canberra Times.
“We’re all very supported of the ‘yes’ campaign and this is the approach we’ve taken.”
