France have been dealt a major blow to their Six Nations hopes with centre Wesley Fofana ruled out of the tournament.
Clermont coach Franck Azema confirmed to reporters that the 29-year-old centre had injured his Achilles tendon.
"We'll wait for the results, but it does not look good," Azema stated hours before the club confirmed the news on their website.
Fofana will meet with a surgeon on Sunday ahead of an operation and a lengthy period on the sidelines.
Fofana prior to the injury was in excellent form for Clermont, as the Top 14 leaders hammered Premiership side Exeter Chiefs in a 48-26 victory that confirmed they will have a home quarter-final in the knockout stages.
His partnership with Rémi Lamerat, Fofana's Clermont team-mate, was a major success for France during the November Tests, making his injury a potential disaster two weeks ahead of the Six Nations for France head coach Guy Novès.
