Fiji came from 0-15 down at the break to beat Tonga 23-18 at ANZ National Stadium in Suva in the opening match of the Pacific Nations Cup.
Saturday's win was a game of two halves as Tonga were flying at the interval thanks to Pila Iongi and Tane Takulua's tries that rocked Fiji.
But the hosts recovered after the break as Ben Volavola and Nemia Soqeta crossed before a 74th minute Eremasi Radrodro try sealed victory.
Fiji will take on Samoa in their second match of the tournament, again in Suva, next Saturday while Tonga will host Georgia in a friendly game.
