Carl Fearns will be released from his contract at Bath a year early in order to join Lyon in Pro D2 in France.

The England Saxons back-row has slipped down the pecking order at the Rec since the arrival of Sam Burgess, and was only a replacement in the Premiership final defeat to Saracens.

Fearns had another year to run on his deal with Bath, but according to the Midi Olympique, he has been released and will join on a two-year deal with Lyon.

Relegated from the Top 14 this season, Lyon will be coached by Pierre Mignoni next season, and have already underlined their ambitions with the signings of Clermont duo Julien Bonnaire, Napolioni Nalaga and former France prop David Attoub.
