England will be without fly-half Owen Farrell for the entire Six Nations after he suffered a knee ligament injury against Clermont on Sunday.
Farrell was assessed by a specialist on Monday who confirmed that he suffered a high grade medial ligament strain that will keep him out for the duration of the Championship.
Geoff Parling (Leicester) and Brad Barritt (Saracens) are also being treated for knee medial ligament strains, Tom Wood (Northampton Saints) for an ankle injury and Kyle Eastmond (Bath) for a strain to his shoulder.
“It’s a real shame for Owen that he sustained this injury and we wish him the best for his recovery,” said England head coach Stuart Lancaster.
“We are fortunate to have three other number tens in the squad in what is a very competitive position and we will look forward to seeing how they go over the Six Nations.
“We will continue to assess and treat the other players’ injuries and will provide an update at the launch tomorrow.”
