Hurricanes and All Blacks hooker Dane Coles is facing between four to five weeks out as his elbow continues to recover.

Coles damaged ligaments after hyperextending his elbow against the Blues back on March 13, with the damage proving to be worse than originally expected.

Surgery is not required but Coles is still some way off returning to action.

"Dane went to the surgeon this morning," Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd told Stuff.

"He has some ligament damage in his elbow and we were concerned he'd require surgical intervention.

"That's not the case, but he will be another four or five weeks until he plays. He will be back for the back end of the season.

"It's tough for Colsey because he wants to really get going this season and I thought he had played particularly well, but its a great opportunity for Motu Matu'u to get another four or five games under his belt and stake a claim of his own."

Matu'u is now set to start Friday's game against the Stormers, with Brayden Mitchell on the bench.
