Leinster and Ireland flanker Josh van der Flier has had an operation on his injured ankle, which will rule him out for eight weeks.

He saw a specialist on Monday having sustained the injury against Ulster and following further review it was decided that he needed surgery.

Van der Flier underwent the surgery on Tuesday and it was a success but he will be out for eight weeks and will miss next Friday's Guinness PRO12 semi-final against Ulster at the RDS Arena and Ireland's tour to South Africa.

Fellow Leinster and Ireland team-mates, full-back Rob Kearney (ankle) and fly-half Johnny Sexton (quad), were both withdrawn against Treviso for precautionary reasons but are making good progress from their injuries.
