Ireland have omitted hooker Rob Herring and centre Noel Reid from their squad, with the pair heading back to Ulster and Leinster respectively.
Joe Schmidt is set to name his final 31-man World Cup squad before August 31 and it is likely the head coach will make further cuts in the coming week.
Herring's departure from the camp leaves Rory Best, Sean Cronin and Richardt Strauss as the hookers while Reid makes way with six centres still in the group.
"Two guys have gone back to their provinces this week and over the next while it'll be an ongoing process," said Ireland's assistant coach Richie Murphy.
"We're not here just to cut players and get rid of them though. When we feel we're in a really good position, guys will feed back to their clubs."
