Newport Gwent Dragons have announced that centre Sam Beard has signed a two-year deal with the Welsh region.

Beard, who is Welsh Qualified, joins Newport Gwent Dragons from fellow PRO12 team Edinburgh. The centre made his debut for the Scottish side in 2013, against Ulster.

Prior to his time in Scotland’s Capital, Beard was part of New Zealand team, Bay of Plenty. Born in Timaru, he moved to Christchurch to pursue a career in rugby and found his feet playing for Burnside’s championship-winning team. From there Beard was called up to the provincial Canterbury B team and went on to play for the Crusader Knights, the development squad for the Crusaders.

After signing his contract, Sam Beard commented: “It was a hard decision to make, but I am really looking forward to the new challenge that lies ahead. The chance to try something new was a great opportunity for me, one which I couldn’t give up.

“I have spoken at length to the coaching staff at the Dragons and they have all spoken highly about what the club are looking to achieve going forward.

“The Dragons have improved immeasurably and are a very happy team.”

He continued: “I have enjoyed my time with Edinburgh and would like to thank the coaches, staff and players who have all been supportive since I joined the club.”

Dragons Director of Rugby, Lyn Jones added: “Sam has played exceptionally well for Edinburgh and starred against us. He’s a player that gets things right.

“He has a great skill-set and is a talented individual and we look forward to him joining the Region.”
