Former Japan scrum coach and France international Marc del Maso has revealed that he is suffering from Parkinson's disease.
Del Maso, 48, won 33 caps for France and appeared in the 1999 Rugby World Cup.
He received substantial praise for his work with Japan's scrum as they produced three wins at this year's Rugby World Cup in England.
Del Maso revealed the illness was first detected in 2012 and that he had chosen to reveal it publicly before more rumours circulated about his health.
"Let's just say there are sports which help illnesses like this and rugby is one of them," Del Maso told Midi Olympique.
"There were rumours doing the rounds so rather than listen to people say stupid things, it was better that they know."
