Deacon hails Sale Sharks’ experienced players

Sale Sharks attack coach Paul Deacon hailed his side's experienced players after their 24-21 win over Worcester Warriors at Sixways on Friday.

First-half tries from TJ Ioane, Will Cliff and Ben Curry, who was named Man of the Match, set up the Sharks' triumph although they had to dig deep to resist a second-half resurgence from the Warriors.

“We don’t win many games away so it was a big tick in the box tonight," Deacon said after the match.

“We thoroughly deserved the win as the experienced players stood up and the young lads followed them, the debutants never looked out of place.

“I’m disappointed that we weren’t further ahead at the interval and we left a couple of tries out there.”

Worcester Warriors coach Sam Vesty bemoaned his team's error count.

“We put them under a lot of pressure but we made too many mistakes, the try just before the interval was a dreadful time to concede a try," he said.

“We couldn’t capitalise on the chances we had as we lost crucial set-piece possession which prevented us from putting them under the pump and the pressure valve was released.

“We’ve got to look at ourselves pretty harshly because we didn’t get enough ball to the wide channels where Bryce Heem looked very strong and sharp and young Ollie Lawrence took his try and assist very well.”
