Team GB forward James Davies admitted the final had been a "bridge too far" for his side after they lost 43-7 to Fiji at the Olympic Games.

Davies was a star performer in Rio this week as he returned to the Sevens field after playing Fifteens for the Scarlets in recent seasons.

And after going down to a rampant Fiji on Thursday, the Welshman said that the squad was happy to pick up the silver medal in Rio.

"Fiji thoroughly deserved the win and we lost to the best side in the world," he revealed when speaking to England Rugby after the final.

“You never know what they are going to do and they are such talented athletes. They are special players, I’m pleased for them."

He added: "I don’t know if we performed above expectations, as a group we knew how much talent was in the squad and we deserve to come away with a silver medal. We are really pleased.

"We put everything on the line but it was a bridge too far. We came here for gold but we’ll take silver."
