The Sharks loose forward Daniel du Preez sustained an injury in their eight-try 53-0 thrashing over the Kings on Saturday in Durban.
Du Preez, who has been an instrumental figure in the Durban side's pack all season long, left the field in the opening ten minutes with a groin injury.
Despite the upcoming bye and June mid-season Super Rugby break, director of rugby Gary Gold was not very confident when asked about the severity of his number eight's setback.
The Lions will host the Sharks on July 2, which will be the Durban outfit's next match.
"Unfortunately Dan looks like he’s torn his groin, it doesn’t look like a fantastic tear," Gold told Sport24.
"We do have six weeks to look after him and get him better but we just hope that when he comes back from the scan that it’s not as bad as what we anticipate, which is maybe needing an operation."
The 20-year-old's early departure from the match meant that the utility back-rower Tera Mtembu had an opportunity to impress the coaches.
Gold has hailed the former Border Bulldogs player for his impact and work-rate.
"It was fantastic to see Tera get a run," he said.
"He’s worked so hard. He had terrible luck last year with one injury after another so this is his second or third week involved again now and I thought he played really nicely when he came on."
